While on patrol, the Sun Bear Station (Veal Pi) rangers ambushed a boat carrying rosewood. One man was arrested. The boat and timber were confiscated. Four of the men jumped ship and swam across the river. Rosewood is the world’s most trafficked wild product, used for luxury furniture and instruments. The UN estimates the value of the illegal logging business to be in the tens of billions of dollars. The recent economic boom in China has spurred a growth in demand for luxury rosewood. Logging for rosewoods not only affects the centuries-old trees but the patches of rainforest that are cleared to access them.
