Marine
Wildlife Alliance’s Marine Seascapes Program focuses mainly on technical assistance projects to strengthen protection of coastal marine areas, including Marine Protected Areas. To date, we have completed threats and needs assessments in Mexico, Costa Rica, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Implementation of assessment recommendations have followed, including workshops, advocating for change in marine legislation or law enforcement policies, the provision of supplies and equipment and training courses in a wide-range of subjects such as surveillance techniques, case reporting, evidence handling and the use of GPS/GIS technology. Wildlife Alliance Projects in the Pacific Rim
Our work in the Western Pacific has focused mainly in the Republic of Palau and in the Federated States of Micronesia, because of the strong financial support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in this region. These projects are designed to strengthen protection of coastal marine areas, including Marine Protected Areas, by assessing weaknesses in enforcement capacity and gaps in legislation and enforcement policy, and addressing those weaknesses through implementation of specific recommendations. These recommendations may include changes in laws, regulations and policy and the provision of necessary equipment and training.
