Of the animals rescued by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT), those that are healthy and suited for the wild are immediately released into protected areas.
However, animals that are too young or not suited for immediate release are cared for within Wildlife Alliance's Care for Rescued Wildlife program at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center.
PTWRC is a Cambodian-run wildlife rescue center located 45 km south of Phnom Penh, in 2,300 hectares of regenerating forest.
Wildlife Alliance's animal husbandry specialists assist with the daily operations of the rescue center. PTWRC currently houses over 1,100 animals, which include 93 species of endangered and threatened animals (elephants, tigers, sun bears, pileated gibbons and many others).
When the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team, supported by Wildlife Alliance, rescues animals from poachers, markets, restaurants and wildlife traffickers, our Care for Rescued Wildlife specialists ensure the rescued animals receive proper medical attention and care to speed a healthy recovery.
Major initiatives started at the rescue center by Wildlife Alliance's Care for Rescued Wildlife team center include an acclaimed gibbon rehabilitation program, the construction of new enclosures for waterbirds, elephants, sun bears, Eld's deer, gibbons and other species, the construction of a water system, and ongoing outreach to visitors.
Between 150,000 - 200,000 visitors toured the rescue center last year, the vast majority of them Cambodian.
