Kouprey Express Hosts a Group from NBIC at Phnom Tamao

On September 16, 2011 the Kouprey Express took a group of 96 people from the National Borey for Infants and Children (NBIC), including orphaned and disabled children, staff, and international volunteers, on a field trip Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center.  For many of these children, it was their first visit to PTWRC and their excitement was palpable.  The visit included a tour of the whole facility and environmental games and art projects to facilitate learning about wildlife.  The day was hot and airless, and even though many of the children were physically handicapped and confined to wheelchairs, their fascination kept them moving.  They were eager to see all the animals and fearless when meeting Lucky, one of PTWRC’s resident elephants.  They got up close with her, petting her hide and hugging her trunk when she touched them “Hello.”  After a delicious lunch at the center, the kids participated in art activities and games.  The KE staff has never seen as many smiling faces as they saw in the NBIC group and a great time was had by all.  We look forward to hosting another group from NBIC soon!

A school visit with the Kouprey Express

Have you ever wondered what goes on when our Kouprey Express mobile environmental education unit visits a school? This March our education bus pulled up to the Angkor Phnom Klong and Veal primary schools in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains to give teachers and students valuable lessons in environmental protection and sanitation.

"Green Day" at the International School of Phnom Penh

On Saturday, September 4 the Kouprey Express team attended “Green Day” held at the International School of Phnom Penh.  Green Day promoted green initiatives and displayed the programs that the students were conducting at their school.  In total, around 2,000 guests attended the event.  The Kouprey Express team focused on discussing the issues facing many of the threatened species in Cambodia. 

Experiencing Conservation

The Kouprey Express team escorted 100 school children, teachers, and community members to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center. A highlight of this excursion was that the children were able to experience close contact with a 3-month-old Sun Bear cub that was recently seized by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team. A staff member of Free the Bears delivered a 60-minute discussion regarding the bear cub and the circumstances of the other bears at the sanctuary
