Advocacy
The decisions made by national governments and international institutions can mean the difference between life and death for some of the planet’s most imperiled species and habitats.
Wildlife Alliance is driven by its fieldwork. But we know how important it is to work with governments and decision makers to build the financial and political support needed to advance conservation policies at the national and global levels. To be effective advocates for responsible management of forests, wildlife, and natural resources, our staff and leaders must be as capable of communicating effectively in the corridors of power as they are at navigating the rainforest.
In Asia we work to strengthen political commitment and capacity to enforce existing laws protecting forests and wildlife, and to draft new ones when needed—even when powerful economic interests stand in our way.
Our legal teams work to prosecute, fine, and send to jail notorious poachers and traffickers. We collaborate our efforts with international wildlife protections groups such as ASEAN-WEN and the International Tiger Coalition.
We also advocate for better zoning and demarcation laws to preserve protected forest and help communities gain access to non-protected lands for cultivation. Under the UN-REDD program we are providing financial incentives for the Cambodian government and local communities to preserve forests.
Finally, we respond to emerging threats such as mines, dams, or logging to ensure that forests and wildlife remain protected from harmful industrial interests.
